Launched in 2011 by master perfumer Calice Becker, this Amber Oud (TYPE) impression is the fourth chapter in By Kilian's legendary Arabian Nights collection. Inspired by the Greek myth of Heliada—whose tears of grief transformed into golden amber—it is a deconstruction and reconstruction of amber itself.

This is oud for people who don't think they like oud.

Unlike the dark, animalic ouds of the Middle East, Becker set out to remove the controversial, medicinal properties of oud and replace them with warmth, sweetness, and light. The result is a fragrance that is delicate, friendly, and utterly disarming.

The opening is a soft, medicinal whisper.

A faint, almost characteristic oud note appears first—just enough to let you know it's there. Then, within minutes, it retreats.

The heart is a golden, resinous surrender.

Madagascar vanilla and Laos benzoin take command. The vanilla is not sugary or candied; it is aged, barrel-like, and sophisticated. The benzoin adds a warm, resinous softness. Amber weaves through both, creating a scent that is powdery, creamy, and impossibly soft.

Jamaican bay leaf adds a judicious, aromatic greenness that lifts the composition. Atlas cedar provides a dry, woody anchor.

The drydown is pure, velvety comfort.
